The Challenge
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA)—Australia’s central bank, has a large IT team, supporting mission critical systems. Staff retention is a critical challenge, particularly in competitive fields like IT, where attracting and keeping skilled talent is essential to maintaining capability and delivering long-term impact. Due to this competitive nature, the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) sought to improve their career development pathways and value proposition for their staff. They were experiencing ambiguity between staff capabilities and career pathways, ad-hoc training processes, and difficulty in navigating internal career progression. ThinkPlaceX were commissioned to explore this challenge and answer the question – How might we develop a robust framework that drives team development and retains a high quality workforce?
Our Response
ThinkPlaceX was engaged to research and understand employee experiences with the current IT Job Family Framework—focusing on career pathways, job roles, and accreditation processes. The project also explored engagement gaps across key resources, including job catalogues, content, talent reviews, selected HR processes, and role classifications.
Through in-depth interviews and a desktop review of existing materials, we identified key gaps and opportunities to improve usability and relevance. These insights informed the design of a new, fit-for-purpose Training and Development Framework, underpinned by a suite of practical tools. ThinkPlaceX delivered:
- A refreshed IT training and development catalogue,
- A comprehensive training and development framework,
- Supporting communication materials,
- Employee profiles, and
- An interactive SharePoint prototype built in Figma, designed as a central digital interface for career development.
The Impact
The project delivered a clear, user-friendly platform to support IT career development, delivering a new training and development framework, catalogue, employee profiles, communication tools, and an interactive SharePoint prototype. This single point of reference enables staff to map career pathways, track progress, access mentoring and secondments, and provides managers with tools to support their teams—laying the foundation for a more engaged, capable, and future-ready workforce.
