Global Leader in Systems Design and Public Sector Innovation

Designing within complex systems requires the ability to work across multiple scales—from the global to the deeply human. Since 2000, John has been a pioneer in applying design to large-scale systems, beginning as a senior executive transforming Australia’s tax system. In 2005, he founded ThinkPlace to bring human-centred design to national and global challenges.

John works across public, private, and international sectors to shape strategy and policy that deliver lasting, human-focused impact. In Australia, he collaborates with government leaders to co-design policies that inform Ministerial decisions. Globally, he plays a leading role in initiatives addressing critical issues such as malnutrition, public health, and sustainable development—partnering with major international organisations to drive systemic change.

John holds a master’s degree in Complexity and Chaos Theory, grounding his approach in a deep understanding of how systems behave, adapt, and evolve. His practice blends systems thinking, co-design, and strategic foresight to catalyse change within institutions.

An author and thought leader, John has contributed to influential works including Design for a Better World and Design for Policy. He is committed to advancing the UN Sustainable Development Goals and continues to mentor the next generation of design leaders worldwide.
